Thalasstrophobia

from Earlier Stuff by Neal Perrine

/

about

I got the idea for this track while reading an article on Voyager 1, the NASA spacecraft that has just left the heliosphere and entered interstellar space. For the title, I combined Thalassophobia with astro. (Thalassophobia is the fear of being stuck at sea) so Thalasstrophobia is the fear of being alone in space. The radio chatter is actual NASA radio chatter, and several of the ambient sounds are sounds that were actually recorded in space (when it flew through gasses) by Voyager 1. The scientists at NASA say that they are turning off Voyager 1's instruments by 2020, because it is running out of power. This moment of disconnection is what I tried to capture. The moment the radio communications turn off, Voyager will be the most alone man-made thing in the universe.
The blues that you hear in the background is the only thing voyager has left of humanity. In the spacecraft, a 5 hour record was placed to show the sounds of earth through music to any extraterrestrials that happen across it. (I hope they have record players. Way to think it through, NASA.)
